Glac Project at Archest and “Imperial Sirmium-City of Legends”

On the 30th of August 2017, the Glac Project Co-Directors took part in the Archeo Open Days in Sremska Mitrovica, in the framework of Archest. Archest is a project that aims at developing an interest in archaeology and an audience within the general public, along the Roman route at four important Roman archaeology sites: Aquileia, Emona, Sirmium and Viminacium. During the two-day conference, the audience was able to hear talks and engage in discussions about archaeology, tourism, urban planning, architecture and conservation and take a tour of Mitrovica’s archaeological sites.

Professor Richard Miles gave a talk on ancient Carthage and the reinvention of the past, Dr Stefan Pop-Lazić gave a lecture about Felix Romuliana and to conclude, they held a joint presentation about the Glac Project.

Our next stop in Sremska Mitrovica was the newly established festival “Imperial Sirmium - City of Legends”, that took place from the 1st 3rd of September 2017. For lovers of all things Roman there was no better place to be! Over the three days of the Festival, we were able to enjoy mosaic, glass-blowing, oil lamps and Roman hair-dos workshops, a rhetoric competition, a theatre play about Mitrovica’s glorious past and Roman cuisine and local wine.

During Archeo Open Days and the Imperial Sirmium-City of Legends festival we had a display about the project and the results of the first season were showcased at the Imperial Palace complex and the City Park.

It is always a pleasure to be back in Sremska Mitrovica, especially to talk about its ancient heritage and support it in becoming a top tourist destination in Serbia!
